A Brief Description of Durweston • Located to the North of Blandford Forum adjacent to the River Stour on the edge of the Blackmoor Vale • Just off the A350 across Durweston Bridge • Approximately 160 dwellings and a population of 481 (2001 Census) This is interestingly only 30 less than in 1851 • A conservation area with sites of outstanding natural beauty and archaeological importance. • It has a much valued resource - a small playing field leased from the Crown Estate (Since 1950's) • The entire village and farmland belonged to the Portman family and was part of the Bryanston Estate until after the second world war when it passed to the Crown Estates (1951) • Until recent times (1960's) Durweston had three shops (including a post office), a reading room, a railway station (Stourpaine and Durweston Halt) and four farms. • Villagers talk of the days when the allotments flourished, everyone supported the village show, football and cricket teams played regularly and there was a youth club. • When the barns and the reading room were available for village events, skittles competitions and meetings, Durweston was a typical, active Dorset village. • Today, Durweston is a growing village and in 2003, acquired a new village hall which is located in the extended playing field, which also includes a tennis court and skate board ramp.
