For the celebrations to mark the installation of two new sculptures in the tower of Durweston Parish Church in February 1992, a performance of Benjamin Britten's cantata Saint Nicholas was organized. As a direct result of that musical experience several of those who took part expressed a desire to form a choral society within the community. A few months later the Durweston Choral Society was formed as an independent body whose aim was to develop choral singing in the community of Durweston and its environs.

Within the first few weeks of rehearsals a membership of almost 40 singers had been formed, with many people travelling some way to attend. The enthusiasm of all the singers plus the generous support of the Society's sponsors made such a wonderful beginning possible.

After a successful first programme in 1993 the Durweston Choral Society has performed once every year. In July 1997 the Society was awarded a Lottery Grant by the Arts Council, through the Arts 4 Everyone Express scheme. The grant, together with support from the local community and other fundraising efforts, enabled it to commission and perform The Passions - on Ode for Music by S.K.Twiselton.

The Society also held a short summer 'Scratch Singing Day' in July 2006.

Anyone wishing to join Durweston Choral Society is most welcome to come to rehearsals the season for which started last September. These are on Wednesdays and start at 7.20 pm and finish between 9.00 and 9.30 pm in Durweston Village Hall. There are no auditions and the only qualifications needed are a wish to sing and a commitment to attend the rehearsals.
